Eating Healthy but Frugally on a Renal Diet
January 27th 2012 -
Every time someone tells me anything about a diet, I immediately see my bank account dwindling. I do not know why, but it seems to me it is much cheaper to eat junk food and things you probably should not be eating than to eat healthy foods. The more restrictive or specialized the diet, the more the foods seem to cost. When they told my father he needed to go on a renal diet, I wondered how they expected him to eat. Think about it, foods that are low in fat and sodium cost more than the regular varieties. Not to mention the fact that they taste very bland so you have to buy special herbs and spices to give them any flavor. It took my mother a couple of months, but she did finally find foods he could eat that were not the most expensive in the market. She also learned ways to cook them that would add flavor. It can be done, it just takes a bit of practice.
